Digital Health in Africa: How Technology is Saving Lives

Telemedicine, electronic patient records, diagnostic AI: e-health is transforming care in Africa. Current state and outlook.

Africa faces a major healthcare challenge: with only 3% of the world's healthcare professionals for 25% of the global disease burden, the continent must innovate. Digital health is emerging as a concrete response.

The GSMA estimates there will be at least 634 million mobile users in sub-Saharan Africa by 2025. This mobile connectivity paves the way for telemedicine, hospital management systems, and electronic patient records.

The Africa CDC launched the Africa HealthTech Marketplace, a platform cataloging digital health solutions tailored to each member country's specific needs. Rwanda has embarked on a vast health data digitalization project aligned with its One Health II strategic plan.

Concretely, what does healthcare facility digitalization mean? At INTERACT GROUP, we supported POLYPAC Clinic in its complete transformation: from reception to hospitalization, including laboratory, radiology, pharmacy, and billing. Result: 450% revenue growth with the same staff. At EMG clinic, neurodiagnostic exam results are delivered same-day thanks to automatic interpretation templates, compared to 2-3 days at other facilities.

Significant challenges remain: 60% of health funding in Africa comes from private sources, and official development assistance for health has dropped by over 70% in recent years. The solution lies in accessible digital tools adapted to local realities.
