Mobile Money: $1.1 Trillion in Transactions in Africa in 2024

Africa is the global leader in mobile money. In 5 years, transactions have doubled. What this means for businesses.

Africa is the undisputed global leader in mobile money. In 2024, the continent recorded over $1.1 trillion in mobile transactions, according to the GSMA. Transaction value grew 15% year-over-year, and account numbers doubled between 2020 and end of 2024.

West Africa and East Africa account for the majority of new active accounts. Use cases have significantly expanded: merchant payments ($105 billion globally), international transfers, microloans, savings, and insurance.

For businesses, this mobile payment revolution has direct implications. A retail store that doesn't accept mobile money loses customers. A company that invoices services without integrating Orange Money or MTN Mobile Money creates unnecessary friction.

This is why integrating mobile payment methods into ERPs has become essential. At INTERACT GROUP, we integrate these payment gateways into our clients' Odoo solutions: point of sale, billing, e-commerce. The goal: provide a seamless experience for end customers while automating accounting on the business side.

With over 634 million mobile users expected in sub-Saharan Africa, companies that don't digitalize their payment chain risk being left behind. Mobile money is no longer an alternative: it's the standard.
